Food in the United States is as diverse as its people. United States cuisine is shaped by immigration from all the continents. To show the diversity of today’s American cuisine, we have written a list of some tasty dishes for you.
Bagels With Egg and Bacon
A bagel filled with scrambled eggs, cheese and crispy bacon is one of the breakfast champions in the USA. If you’re in a hurry, a bagel with eggs and bacon is a breakfast that will keep you full for a long time. Typically, black coffee is served with a bagel in the US.
Pancakes
American pancakes are different from their European ones. The pancakes are only the size of the palm of your hand, very thick and fluffy. The fluffiness doesn’t come from whipped egg whites, but from large amounts of leavening agents, usually baking soda and baking powder at the same time. In the USA, pancakes are eaten not only as a dessert, but above all as a breakfast dish. At a classic American diner, you can order a short stack, a stack of three pancakes, or a complete stack of five or six pancakes. They’re usually served with a good dollop of whipped butter, fluffy butter and lots of maple syrup. There is also something salty, for example fried eggs, scrambled eggs, hash browns or ham. For us, the pancakes are one of the kind of attractions in the USA that you should not miss.
Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich
If you want to whip up an American mixture of sweet and salty quickly at home, the peanut butter and jelly sandwich is a good choice. The sandwich consists of peanut butter with a fruit jelly and two slices of toast. The two slices of toast are spread with peanut butter and then jam is added. By the way, jam in the USA is mostly the sweet and sour grape jelly. In Europe they are only available in specific shops with items from the USA. You can use a different jam if you have to.
Caesar Salad
Caesar Salad is a famous salad from the USA. It was named after chef Caesar, who created it in 1920s at his diner in Mexico. The salad later became a trend in USA and is still considered a classic today. The salad consists of romaine lettuce, parmesan and croutons with a garlic vinaigrette dressing. There are also variants with chicken breast or diced bacon.
Hot Dog
A hot dog is now a true classic in this country. It consists of a sausage in a bun. Originally, the hot dog was invented by immigrant Feltman, who came up with the idea of putting the Frankfurter in a bun to save on plates. Incidentally, sausages are not the only influence from European cuisine on the USA. There’s more to come. In the US, hot dogs are mostly eaten with cheese, onions, mustard, ketchup and relish.
